Daisies Are for Men

September 25, 2009 Leave a comment

I’d like to share with you one of my favorite rings in the Gold Steel and Stone collection. That is the two-tone and diamond ring I like to call “Daisy”.

Daisy - two tone gold men's diamond ringThe uneducated may scoff and call it girly, but with more than 12 grams of 14 carat gold and a full carat of fine diamonds, they’d be wrong.

I’m particularly fond of the way the white gold petals shine like mirrors around the diamond studded center of the ring. All contrasted by the textured finish on the classic yellow gold housing it all. Truly a masterpiece.

We are offering this wonderful ring at a mere fraction of it’s retail value. Save 47% off the retail price if you get it through us. That’s a whopping $1900 that stays in your pocket! We’ll even ship it to you for free.

Check it out today or take a look at our complete collection of men’s rings.

Buy Your Men’s Diamond Ring From an Honest Dealer

September 22, 2009 Leave a comment

If you are interested in purchasing a men’s diamond ring, one of the things you need to know is how to spot a crooked dealer. There are several tricks that shady dealers may try to pull on you. The best protection is in knowing what to look for when choosing a reputable dealer. Following these simple steps will help you avoid the most common cons.

If possible, avoid working with jewelers that you are unfamiliar with. This isn’t always possible, however, particularly if it you have never shopped for a diamond before. It is best to do some research beforehand. The Internet is a great place to start. Search for the shop’s name in one of the major Search Engines. If the store you are planning to go to makes a habit of ripping people off, the chances are good that someone has written an article or a blog post about it.

Another good way to check up on a company is to research them with the Better Business Bureau. Simply go to their website and look up the company by name. You can even narrow the search by including the city and state the company does business in. The Better Business Bureau grades a company based on customer feedback and maintains a summary of complaints filed against them.

If the dealer of men’s diamond rings you want to shop with passes the Internet test, there are still three things you should pay attention to when you go to their show room. Sometimes even the best of companies will unwittingly hire a shady employee, so don’t let your guard down.

Look at the price tag attached to the men’s diamond ring you wish to purchase. If you can understand what the ring will cost without the aid of the salesman’s inside knowledge, you’re off to a good start. You want to avoid shopping at dealers that befuddle the price of the ring with and obscure code that an employee has to interpret for you, otherwise you leave yourself open for artificial price inflation by the salesman, even in an establishment that would otherwise be on the level.

Next, ask to see the diamond’s certificate. If your dealer is honest, his diamonds will all be certified by a reputable agency such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the American Gemological Institute (AGS). This certification serves you as a bit of insurance in the matter and if your salesman can’t or won’t show it to you, leave immediately.

Finally, ask the dealer to let you look at the stone through a 10-power loupe. Diamond’s are graded under 10x magnification by the professionals and you should do the same. If your dealer is on the level, they will provide you with one.

The cons are out there so be careful when shopping for a men’s diamond ring. Whether it’s just one greedy salesman or a whole den of thieves. Follow these steps and steer yourself away from those who pad their wallets by taking advantage of poorly informed shoppers.

Two-Tone Gold Rings at GoldSteelAndStone.com

Our selection of men’s jewelry just gets better and better. To help keep it organized, we have created a Two-Tone Gold category at GoldSteelAndStone.com.

Two-Tone gold is one of my favorites because of the delightful contrasts it creates. Another great benefit of two-tone gold is that I’m allergic to the nickel used to make it white, so I can’t wear white gold. But if it’s used as an accent in an otherwise yellow gold ring, then I can wear a stylish two-tone piece without worry.

Please visit our Two-Tone Gold category and let us know what you think. As always, your feedback is appreciated.

Know What to Look for in a Men’s Diamond Ring

September 15, 2009 Leave a comment

A men’s diamond ring is a big investment and should not be made without knowing about some of the pitfalls you may face. Some Salesmen will try to sell you stones and jewelry that are not what they seem to be. Here are a few tips for avoiding the more common scams.

Look for Jeweler’s with a good reputation. It is always best to start with jewelers that you are familiar with and trust. If you have not worked with a specific jeweler before, there are a couple of things you can do to protect yourself: First, ask to see the certificate of the stone you are buying. Each diamond is different and should be certified. If the salesman won’t show you the certificate, walk away. The second, test of the jeweler’s integrity is to ask to see the stone through a 10-power loupe. If the jeweler is reputable, they will provide you with one.

Pay attention to the setting of the stone. Diamonds are expensive stones and are only set in high quality metals. If you find a men’s diamond ring that is set in low karat gold or is plated, be suspicious.

Take a close look at the stone itself. There are several ways that you can verify whether the stone is real, but the simplest is to look at it through a 10x loupe. Diamonds are the hardest material found on earth and do not scratch or scuff easily; diamond substitutes on the other hand are not so durable. If you see a great deal of scuffing on the stone, it is most likely a fake.

Another simple test is to look at price of the men’s diamond ring. A reputable dealer will prominently display the exact price of a men’s diamond ring. They will tell you exactly how much you will pay and not try to hide it from you. On the other hand, be wary of dealers that use arcane coding systems to label the price of a diamond. There are legitimate reasons to do this, but err on the side of caution. If the salesman has to interpret the price code on the ring for you, then you are vulnerable to being scammed by a shady salesman, even if the Jeweler itself is normally reputable.

Finally, you should always get a second opinion. Once you have made your purchase, you should take your men’s diamond ring to other jewelers in the area to get it appraised. If the ring is worth what you paid for it, the appraisals will come in at about the same price. If the appraisals come in low, then you know you’ve been ripped off.

If you have been ripped off, go back to the original jeweler and get your money back. Once again, it is important for you to get a copy of the diamond’s certificate. This will track the inclusions that uniquely identify the diamond. The jeweler may accuse you of making a switch (which has also been known to happen, so don’t take it personally). If that happens, having the right certificate to go with the diamond will help solidify your case.

As with anything else, the simplest thing you can do to protect yourself when shopping for a men’s diamond ring is to shop informed. Knowing what to look for is the first step to avoid being scammed.

6 Things to Look for In Your Men’s Diamond Ring

September 8, 2009 Leave a comment

Buying your men’s diamond ring is not a choice to be taken lightly. In order to find the best deal, there are 6 things an educated shopper should know. First, we will take a look at the 4 C’s of purchasing a diamond, and we will conclude with the gold in which your diamonds will be set.

Cut
Cut is not to be confused with the shape of the diamond. Rather, it refers to the technical skill and precision with which the stone was cut. At the most basic level, we like diamonds because they are excellent prisms. The ultimate goal of the cut, is to create a gem that gathers light entering its face and casts it back out through the face, creating the characteristic sparkle that makes them so highly sought after.

Men’s diamond rings that host superior cut diamonds will be more radiant, while stones of lower quality cuts will loose light and thus have less “fire”.

Color
When choosing a men’s diamond ring, it is important not to overlook the color of the stone. The color actually refers to the lack of color in the stone. Color is rated from “D” through “Z”, with “D” color stones lacking any color at all. In addition to acting like a prism, a diamond is a filter as well. The more color the stone has, the larger the proportion of natural light it absorbs.

Colored diamonds can be beautiful and quite valuable in their own right. While in most cases, a stone’s value decreases as its color rating progresses through the scale, stones with ratings beyond Z are exceedingly rare. As such these “fancy color” diamonds can be quite valuable, despite their pigmentation.

Clarity
The clarity of a diamond refers to the presence (or preferably, absence) of imperfections called inclusions. A stone with few inclusions has more luster than one with many inclusions. The value is further increased by the rarity of increasingly flawless diamonds.

In my own opinion, the original clarity of the stone is of decreasing importance due to the process known as Clarity Enhancing. Using this process, many of the imperfections in a diamond can be filled in with a chemically similar compound. Stones modified in this process are still considered natural diamonds, but are often a fraction of the cost of similar, untreated diamonds.

Carat Weight
The weight of the diamond is measured in “carats”. The term comes from the practice of using carob seeds as a standard for weighing precious stones against. Carats were standardized in 1907 when the Fourth General Conference on Weights and Measures defined “metric carat” as 200 mg.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to choosing men’s diamond rings, as the gemcutter often has to make a choice between preserving the mass of a stone, and making a better cut. It isn’t unknown for a stone to be cut at a lower quality to maintain as much of its carat weight as possible.

Gold is the most popular choice for men’s diamond rings and other jewelry. In addition to it being stunningly beautiful, gold does not rust or corrode. When choosing your ring, there are two things of which you aught to be aware.

Karat
First is the purity of the gold, this is its karat value. 100% pure gold is defined as being 24 karat, in homage to the Roman solidus, a gold coin weighing 24 carob seeds, which was originally minted by Diocletian.

24 karat gold is very soft, (and very expensive) so it is often alloyed with base metals like copper or finer metals like silver or palladium. The karat value of the resulting alloy is the proportion of gold in the mixture. For example: 14 karat gold is 14 parts gold and 10 parts base metal.

Plated or Solid?
Second is whether or not the ring is gold plated. There are several techniques to plate a base metal with gold, both electrolytic and mechanical. However the plating is done, it will wear away over time. How long it lasts will depend upon how often you wear the ring and how thick the original plating was.

The chances are good that if you are paying for a real diamond, the ring will be gold clear through, but forewarned is forearmed as the saying goes.

Use these criteria as a guide when you buy a men’s diamond ring. Educating yourself before you make your decision will help you get the most for your money.
